Earlier this year I was working too much in my practice, the business can get so busy, and HS said pull it up , I have people for you to encourage and spend time with, your main work is with me. Keep it in balance.
I still want you to practice law because you will reach many people through the business of serving people.
So I started to dial back a little and make more time for prayer and getting in touch with some disciples. Then out of the blue a new contact gets in touch.
How do I seek first the kingdom and what does that look like in the midst of my life, family, my two precious sons, my business (law practice) physical training.
What does it even mean to be a disciple? Is that the same as someone who believes in Yeshua?
The Hebrew word for disciple is talmid. This word stresses the relationship between rabbi (teacher or master) and disciple (student). A talmid of Yeshua's day would give up his entire life in order to be with his teacher. The disciple didn't only seek to know what the teacher knew, as is usually the case today.
The whole point of being a disciple is that you live exactly like Him– you treat people like him, you make the same choices like him, you love and befriend people like him, you live fearless and bold like him—you bear fruit like him. The talmidim would live with their rabbi so they could literally know how to live in every single situation. They memorized his teachings, so they could then go and teach others. These talmidim were not there to observe—they were there to become so close to the rabbi that they lived exactly like him in every situation.
Unlike the majority of rabbis, however, Yeshua sought out and called his disciples to himself (Matthew 4:18-20). Yeshua did not wait upon their willingness to come, but sought them specifically. Because we see Yeshua picking out these boys as they are working, we know that these were not the “best of the best” students; they were finished with their schooling- they tested out of the rabbi program and weren’t even qualified to be disciples most likely. Instead, Yeshua was unconcerned about his status as a rabbi, as having the best students follow him—he looked upon their hearts, found the unqualified, and saw who they could be with his guidance.
We are told in Ephesians 1:3-10 that Yeshua does the same with us—he specifically chooses each of us. The word used in the above Ephesians passage, “chosen,” means carefully selected, handpicked, to pick out for oneself.
When I was 19 years of age I recognised Him calling me to follow him. I started to read and study His word and look for others that knew Him. As I started to live with Him, Yeshua's presence, his living water, began to heal my life.
Until His return my practice as a disciple it is to know Him, to live in His love and to be available in ministering with those He is already calling. To make time to help others who are either seeking Him, or new to the Word to nurture them and help them grow as disciples.
What does being a disciple look like in your life?
